Is TikTok Really Spying on You?

What No One Is Telling You About Data Security (and Why That Pisses Me Off)

I recently did a solo episode of the podcast and it is part myth-busting, part technical dive, and 100% real talk. After a friend called me a “bad American” for using TikTok, I decided to rip the lid off this conversation. What followed was a no-BS look at patriotism, business, surveillance, and digital security—especially the stuff the mainstream media conveniently leaves out.

Here are some key takeaways:

Patriotism ≠ Platform Ban

Being proud of your country doesn’t mean blindly torching tools like TikTok—especially when they’re fueling growth for thousands of American small businesses. TikTok is a powerful engine for entrepreneurship and creative freedom.

Reality check: Banning TikTok would pull the rug out from under a huge ecosystem of U.S.-based creators and entrepreneurs.

The Data Defense Nobody’s Talking About

TikTok partnered with Oracle (yes, that Oracle) to isolate U.S. user data on American soil. We're talking locked-down, monitored, and encrypted. The initiative, known as Project Texas, stores data in a secure Texas-based Oracle facility with strict oversight, firewalls, and physical security.

Translation: Your TikTok data isn’t flying off to China on a dragon—it’s sitting in a Fort Knox-level data center in Texas, audited by an American company.

The Real Truth About App Permissions

Contrary to fear-mongering headlines, apps like TikTok can’t just slurp up your social security number or download your soul. iOS has layered security, including:

  • App sandboxing (apps can’t escape their box)

  • Code signing (developers must be verified)

  • User consent (you approve access to location, camera, mic, etc.)

  • App Store reviews (manual + automated checks for sketchy behavior)

  • Secure boot chains & the Secure Enclave (no backdoor hacks happening here)

TL;DR: Your iPhone is basically a digital castle. Apps must knock, show ID, and get your permission before entering any room. To learn more check out the Apple Platform Security Guide

The Narrative No One's Pushing

Why isn’t anyone talking about all this real security work going on behind the scenes? Maybe it’s not as juicy as a political soundbite. Maybe it doesn’t get clicks. But that’s why I recorded this episode. Because the truth needs a loud, gritty voice sometimes.

My Take

I’m not saying TikTok is perfect. But I am saying this: Understand the system before you burn it down. If you’re a creator, small business owner, or side hustler who thrives on the platform—don't let misinformation crush your momentum.

Quote of the Week: “The enemy may not be the tool—it may be ignorance.”

Probably me, after a strong cup of coffee

If this episode gave you even a little bit of a new perspective, do me a solid:

  • Listen to the full episode here

  • Forward this to a friend or fellow entrepreneur who's hearing the TikTok hate.

  • Hit reply and let me know—do you think TikTok is really a threat?
